Many constructive partnerships exist between UAE and US institutions in the fields of health care, education, culture, business, energy and media. These kinds of partnerships provide the UAE with a combination of financial benefits and enhanced local capabilities, while enabling US institutions to expand their presence internationally. Current partnerships exist in the following categories:
Harvard University Kennedy School of Government
In 2014, the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Government of the United Arab Emirates launched the Emirates Leadership Initiative (ELI), an innovative new education program. The five-year program promotes educational exchanges between the UAE and US and helps train and empower emerging leaders and public officials across the UAE and the Middle East. The program includes fellowships for graduate students from the Arab world to study at the Kennedy School; a research initiative focused on the Middle East; executive education for senior officials from the region; and a field visit to the UAE for Kennedy School students.
New York University
New York University created “NYU Abu Dhabi,” a Middle Eastern campus of NYU and the first comprehensive liberal arts and sciences campus with a robust research component to be operated abroad by a major US university. NYUAD graduated its first class in 2014.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
MIT continues to work with the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company to enhance the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi. The Institute, which focuses on clean energy technologies, is the region’s first institution dedicated to research-driven graduate programs.
Indiana University and Utah University
The two universities have partnered with Zayed University in the UAE to offer a master’s degree in public administration.
University of Pennsylvania - Wharton School
The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania offers the Strategic Thinking and Leadership program in Dubai, as part of its Accelerated Development Program certificate curriculum.
Rochester Institute of Technology
Rochester Institute of Technology welcomed its first students at a new Dubai campus in August 2008.
New York Institute of Technology (NYIT)
Since 2005, NYIT has been offering degree programs at the Center of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT) Industrial Park, in Abu Dhabi. In 2007, NYIT-Abu Dhabi became the first American university in the United Arab Emirates licensed by the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research.
Colorado School of Mines
Colorado School of Mines and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company signed a 10-year agreement for the development of the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, a one-of-a-kind collaboration between industry and academia that brings world-class educational resources and research to the Gulf.
US-UAE Business Council
Major companies in the US and UAE have facilitated the establishment of a dedicated US-UAE Business Council, based in Washington, DC and affiliated with the US Chamber of Commerce, to expand bilateral commercial opportunities between the two countries.
Vital Voices, a Washington-based nongovernmental organization, and the US State Department have established the MENA Businesswomen’s Network. The Dubai Business Women’s Council is among the network’s seven founding members. Their aim is to build a network of businesswomen, increase the number of women in business, increase the value of their businesses, advance the role of women overall in society and promote a regional culture of women's entrepreneurship.
Mubadala Development Company partnered with Texas-based Electronic Data Systems in a 60:40 joint venture to form Injazat Data Systems, an information technology and business process services provider serving major business and government customers in the Middle East region.
Ruwaad Holdings, a UAE-based development company, signed a licensing deal with Paramount Licensing to develop a Paramount Pictures-branded theme park in the United Arab Emirates.
Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Development Company and Lockheed Martin signed a memorandum of understanding to expand their strategic relationship and jointly explore opportunities for military aircraft sustainment in the United Arab Emirates.
General Electric Co.
GE and Mubadala Development Company, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, announced a framework agreement on a global partnership encompassing a broad range of initiatives including commercial finance, clean energy research and development, aviation, industry and corporate learning.
Boeing and Strata
Boeing and Mubadala Development Company, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, announced a 10 year direct contract for Strata Manufacturing, Mubadala Aerospace’s advanced composite aerostructures facility to produce commercial composite aerostructures for the 777 and 787 Dreamliner. In addition, the companies announced a strategic agreement that positions Strata to be a future supplier of the vertical fin for the Dreamliner, a major composite assembly for Boeing’s most advanced airplane program.
Kor Hotel Group
Mubadala Development Company, a business development and investment company headquartered in Abu Dhabi, and Los Angeles-based Kor Hotel Group, announced the formation of a strategic partnership through Mubadala’s acquisition of 50 percent of Kor Hotel Group. The agreement focused on global expansion of The Tides and Viceroy brands in key gateway cities and top resort destinations.
AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), an investment company owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, announced the creation of a US-headquartered, semiconductor manufacturing company to address growing demand for independent, leading-edge foundry production capabilities. The new global company, GlobalFoundries was launched in March 2009 and is based in Silicon Valley with manufacturing operations in Dresden, Germany; Malta; New York; and Singapore.
Sports and Culture
UAE Embassy Community Soccer Program
Since 2010, the UAE Embassy has supported a nationwide community soccer field program that partners with local organizations, such as professional sports teams, public school systems or nonprofit youth organizations, to provide quality playing fields in underserved communities around the US.
In 2006, the New York-based Guggenheim Museum announced a partnership with Abu Dhabi to establish a world-class museum devoted to modern and contemporary art.
New York Film Academy
Abu Dhabi signed a deal with the New York Film Academy to establish a film academy in the UAE capital.
American Swimming Coaches Association
The UAE Swimming Association signed a long-term agreement with the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) aimed at lifting the sport’s profile in the UAE. The ASCA will provide Olympic-level coaches and technical staff to assist in the development of UAE swimmers and coaching staff.
American horseracing network TVG reached an agreement with Dubai Sports Channel to make TVG programming available in more than eight million homes across the Arabian Peninsula.
Occidental Petroleum owns 24.5 percent of the groundbreaking Dolphin Energy Project, a unique source of energy for the Southern Gulf that connects three GCC nations - the UAE, Qatar and Oman. Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Development Company owns 51 percent of the project.
ExxonMobil signed an agreement with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to receive a 28 percent undivided interest out of ADNOC's 88 percent interest in the Upper Zakum Oil Field, one of the world's largest oil fields. The UAE is the only oil producer in the Gulf region to maintain private-sector participation in the oil industry, with international oil companies holding 40 percent shares in ADNOC.
The international environmental group WWF and the Government of Abu Dhabi launched a Sustainability Strategy to validate Masdar City, the world’s first carbon-neutral, waste-free and car-free city.
Children’s National Medical Center
The UAE and Children’s National Medical Center have a long-standing relationship built on a mutual shared vision to advance medical innovation to improve children’s health worldwide. In 2009, the Government of Abu Dhabi made a historic gift of $150 million to establish the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National. The Sheikh Zayed Institute is breaking new ground in research that is making pediatric surgery more precise, less painful, and less invasive for children in the US, the UAE, and around the world.
Harvard Medical School Center for Global Health Delivery – Dubai
In a joint effort by Harvard Medical International and Dubai Healthcare City, Harvard Medical School Center for Global Health Delivery – Dubai was launched in 2004 as part of the government of Dubai’s mission to develop excellence for health care delivery, medical education and research.
Johns Hopkins Medicine is managing the Tawam Hospital in Abu Dhabi. Johns Hopkins faculty members are also involved in the development of a public health doctoral program for the UAE and providing advice on preventive health care programs.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi
In 2015, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi opens its doors to patients in all units. A unique and unparalleled extension of US-based Cleveland Clinic’s Model of Care, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi provides direct access to the world’s best healthcare, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, in collaboration with the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and the US State Department’s Middle East Partnership Initiative, is developing programs with UAE women’s groups, government officials, physicians and medical organizations to raise awareness of breast cancer, and facilitate more effective outcomes in prevention and treatment.
The New England Center for Children
The leading autism center in Massachusetts signed an agreement with Health Authority Abu Dhabi to manage a $100 million, decade-long effort to bring cutting-edge research and treatment for autism to children and families in the UAE.
The Methodist Hospital
Methodist International, a subsidiary of The Methodist Hospital in Houston, signed an unprecedented agreement with Emaar Healthcare Group, the healthcare subsidiary of Emaar Properties, to build, operate and manage its health care centers throughout the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey.
Perot Systems Corporation completed the successful roll-out of a Hospital Information System in multiple hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centres in Abu Dhabi.
